Every load we price, sorted by cost per round delivered to your state
We track 8 .224 Valkyrie loads from 2 dealers. The cheapest delivered to AR, shipping included, is Federal AE .224 Valkyrie 75gr TMJ Ammo at $0.77 a round. By use: Target & Range from $0.77, Hunting from $1.37, and Competition from $1.37.
The .224 Valkyrie is Federal's AR-15 cartridge for long-range shooting with heavy .224" bullets. Federal designed it in 2017, necking the 6.8 SPC case down to .224. An AR-15 conversion needs a Valkyrie barrel plus a 6.8 SPC bolt and magazines. Federal recommends a 1:7 twist and rates its heavy match loads as supersonic past 1,300 yards.
The loads here run from 60 to 90gr. For long-range steel and matches, use the 80.5 to 90gr match loads at 2,675 to 2,925 fps, such as Gold Medal Berger or Hornady 88gr ELD Match. The 75gr TMJ and BTHP loads at 3,000 fps are for practice. The 60gr V-Max at 3,300 fps is for varmints. The 90gr Fusion soft point is for deer where a .22 centerfire is legal, so check your state's hunting-cartridge rules.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Pros
- Against .223 Remington: 88 to 90gr bullets drift and drop less at 600 yards and beyond.
- Against 6.5 Grendel: lighter bullets mean less recoil, so it's easier to spot your own hits.
- It keeps the AR-15 lower and upper receiver; the change is a barrel, bolt and magazines.
- The 60gr varmint loads reach 3,300 fps for flat shooting on coyotes and prairie dogs.
Cons
- It won't run on a standard 5.56 bolt or magazines, so it needs 6.8 SPC parts.
- The 88 to 90gr bullets need a 1:7 twist; a 1:8 or slower barrel may not stabilize them.
- Against 6.5 Grendel for deer: a 90gr bullet carries less weight and energy than a 123gr.
- A 6.8 SPC magazine holds fewer rounds than a 5.56 magazine of the same length.
