Hornady markets its 88-grain ELD Match for target and match shooting. The ELD Match is Hornady's polymer-tipped match bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .545, and this load starts it at 2,675 fps. A heavy bullet that the wind moves less is the reason to choose it over the lighter .224 Valkyrie match loads.
Compared with Federal's 90-grain Sierra MatchKing, the two are close. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD Match about 18 inches sideways and the MatchKing about 17. The MatchKing kicks about 6 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's Gold Medal 80.5-grain Berger, the ELD Match starts 250 fps slower and drops more. Zeroed at 100 yards, the ELD Match drops about 57 inches at 500 and the Berger about 50.
Buy the ELD Match if you shoot steel and paper at 300 to 500 yards and want a heavy bullet with a little less recoil than the 90-grain MatchKing loads. Pick Federal's Sierra MatchKing or Remington's Premier Match 90-grain MatchKing if every inch of wind drift counts. Pick the Berger if less drop and lighter recoil matter more; it kicks about 8 percent less. For hunting at a similar weight, Federal's Fusion 90-grain is a bonded soft point that Federal markets for big game, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,700 fps.
