How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Federal sells its American Eagle 75-grain load for the range. Federal lists it for competition, long-range and target shooting, and calls it ideal for target practice. It uses a 75-grain full metal jacket bullet, a jacketed practice bullet with a closed nose, rated at a G1 BC of .400, and leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps.

Zeroed at 100 yards, the bullet lands about 12 inches low at 300 yards. Past 300 yards, wind becomes the main thing to read. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the bullet about 22 inches sideways. That is how far a breezy day can move your hits off center at that distance.

Buy it for zero checks, drills and steel at the range. Hornady's BLACK 75-grain BTHP is the step up at the same bullet weight: Hornady markets it for target shooting and varmints, and it leaves the muzzle at the same 3,000 fps with the same recoil in the same rifle. The two follow nearly the same path out to 500 yards, so practice with the American Eagle carries over to the BLACK. For hunting, choose a load its maker markets for game; Federal lists this one for target shooting.

Strengths
  • Leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps and is still moving at 1,931 fps at 500 yards
  • Federal sells the 75-grain full metal jacket for target practice, a fit for zero checks and steel
  • Zeroed at 200 yards, it lands about 7 inches low at 300 yards
Limitations
  • Drops about 49 inches at 500 yards from a 100-yard zero
  • A steady 10 mph crosswind pushes it about 13 inches at 400 yards
  • Federal lists the 75-grain full metal jacket for target shooting, not hunting
