How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Hornady markets the Varmint Express 60-grain V-Max for varmints, and it suits shooters who want a fast, light-kicking .224 Valkyrie load for that work. The V-Max is a polymer-tipped varmint bullet. It is rated at a G1 BC of .265 and leaves the muzzle at 3,300 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it is only about 2.5 inches low at 200.

Compared with Sierra's Prairie Enemy 69-grain BlitzKing, the V-Max carries a bullet 9 grains lighter and starts 175 fps faster, 3,300 fps against 3,125. It also kicks about 19 percent less in the same rifle. The light V-Max bullet does lose ground to wind as distance grows. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes it about 10 inches sideways; that is how far from your aiming point the bullet lands if you make no allowance for the wind. Zeroed at 200 yards, it drops about 20 inches at 400.

Buy the V-Max if you shoot varmints at moderate distances and want the faster start and the lighter recoil. Pick the Prairie Enemy 69 if you would rather shoot a heavier bullet; Sierra lists its 69-grain BlitzKing bullet for varmint hunting and target shooting, and the Prairie Enemy kicks about 24 percent more than the V-Max. If your shots stretch out, allow for wind with the V-Max: by 500 yards the same 10 mph wind pushes it about 32 inches.

Strengths
  • Leaves the muzzle at 3,300 fps, against 3,125 for the Sierra Prairie Enemy 69
  • Kicks about 19 percent less than the Sierra Prairie Enemy 69 in the same rifle
  • Zeroed at 200 yards, it is only about 7 inches low at 300
Limitations
  • A 10 mph crosswind pushes it about 19 inches sideways at 400 yards
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 49 inches at 500
  • Its 60-grain bullet is 9 grains lighter than the Sierra Prairie Enemy 69's
