How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Hornady markets its BLACK 75-grain BTHP for target shooting and varmints. The bullet is a boat-tail hollow point, a match-style hollow point with a tapered base, rated at a G1 BC of .395. It leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps. Its appeal is speed and light recoil; what it gives up is wind drift at long range.

Compared with Federal's Gold Medal 80.5-grain Berger, the BLACK gives up a little in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the BLACK about 22 inches sideways and the Berger about 20. The Berger kicks about 12 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's 90-grain Sierra MatchKing, the gap is wider: the same wind pushes the MatchKing only about 17 inches at 500 yards. Zeroed at 100 yards, the BLACK drops about 49 inches at 500 and the MatchKing about 56. The MatchKing also kicks about 28 percent harder in the same rifle.

Buy the BLACK if you shoot targets and varmints and want less recoil than the Berger or the MatchKing. Pick the Berger if you want a little less wind drift for a modest step up in recoil. Pick the 90-grain MatchKing, or Remington's Premier Match 90-grain MatchKing, if you shoot mostly at 500 yards in wind. For practice at the same bullet weight, Federal's American Eagle 75-grain is a full metal jacket range load that leaves the muzzle at the same 3,000 fps.

Strengths
  • Kicks about 17 percent less than Hornady's 88-grain ELD Match in the same rifle
  • Leaves the muzzle 75 fps faster than Federal's Gold Medal 80.5-grain Berger, 3,000 fps against 2,925
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, drops about 12 inches at 300; Remington's Premier Match 90-grain MatchKing drops about 14
Limitations
  • Hornady's 88-grain ELD Match drifts about 4 inches less at 500 yards in a 10 mph crosswind
  • Starts 300 fps faster than Remington's Premier Match 90-grain MatchKing but is 43 fps slower by 500 yards
  • Its G1 BC of .395 is lower than the .441 of Federal's Gold Medal 80.5-grain Berger
