Federal markets its 90-grain Sierra MatchKing load for competition, long-range and target shooting. The MatchKing is Sierra's hollow point match bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .563, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,700 fps. The heavy bullet is the reason to buy it: at 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes it about 17 inches sideways.

Compared with Remington's Premier Match 90-grain MatchKing, there is nothing to choose between them by the numbers. Both carry the same bullet weight, muzzle speed and G1 BC, so their drop and wind figures are the same. Compared with Hornady's 88-grain ELD Match, the Federal starts 25 fps faster and drifts slightly less, with the same wind pushing the ELD Match about 18 inches at 500 yards. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Federal drops about 56 inches at 500 and the ELD Match about 57. The ELD Match kicks about 5 percent less in the same rifle.

Buy it if you shoot at 300 to 500 yards and want a heavy match bullet that the wind moves as little as possible. The Remington is an equal swap. Pick the ELD Match if you prefer a polymer-tipped bullet at nearly the same weight. Pick Federal's Gold Medal 80.5-grain Berger if recoil matters more; it kicks about 13 percent less. For hunting at the same bullet weight, Federal's Fusion 90-grain is a bonded soft point that Federal markets for big game; the same wind pushes it about 24 inches at 500 yards.
