Product Overview
Remington markets the Premier AccuTip-V as a varmint load. Its 50-grain AccuTip-V is Remington's polymer-tipped varmint bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .242, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,800 fps.
Compared with Hornady's Superformance Varmint 50-grain V-Max, the AccuTip-V starts 200 fps slower with the same bullet weight. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the AccuTip-V about 30 inches sideways and the Hornady about 28. Zeroed at 100 yards, the AccuTip-V drops about 37 inches at 500 and the Hornady about 32. Compared with Winchester's Varmint-X 55-grain, the AccuTip-V starts 120 fps faster and kicks about 14 percent less in the same rifle. The heavier Varmint-X gains very little in the wind: at 500 yards the two drift within an inch of each other.
Buy the AccuTip-V if you shoot varmints and want a polymer tip that stays close to the Hornady in the wind while kicking less. Pick the Hornady V-Max if you want the flatter path and don't mind about 7 percent more recoil. Pick the Varmint-X if you want a load its maker also markets for predators; Winchester lists everything from prairie dogs to coyotes. If you want a copper hollow point with no lead core, Barnes' VOR-TX 50-grain TSX is one, and Barnes markets it for medium game as well as varmints.
