Product Overview
Hornady markets its Superformance Varmint V-Max as a varmint load. The V-Max is Hornady's polymer-tipped varmint bullet; this one is rated at a G1 BC of .242 and leaves the muzzle at 4,000 fps. It starts faster than the Remington and Federal loads of the same bullet weight and stays ahead of them all the way to 500 yards.
Compared with Remington's Premier AccuTip-V, a polymer-tipped bullet with the same weight and G1 BC, the Hornady starts 200 fps faster. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Hornady about 17 inches sideways and the AccuTip-V about 18. Compared with Remington's UMC 45-grain JHP, which leaves the muzzle just as fast, the Hornady holds its speed much better. The same wind pushes the UMC about 26 inches at 400 yards. Zeroed at 100 yards, the UMC drops about 21 inches at 400 and the Hornady about 16.
Buy the Hornady if you shoot varmints out to 400 or 500 yards and want the flattest path of the 50-grain loads. Pick the AccuTip-V if you want nearly the same wind drift with a little less recoil. Pick the UMC 45 if light recoil matters more than reach; it kicks about 19 percent less in the same rifle. If you need a lead-free bullet, Hornady's Superformance Varmint 35-grain NTX starts 450 fps faster.
