Product Overview
Federal markets its American Eagle 50-grain JHP for predators and varmints, from prairie dogs to coyotes. The bullet is a jacketed hollow point, with an open nose rather than a polymer tip. It is rated at a G1 BC of .204 and leaves the muzzle at 3,850 fps, a little faster than Remington's 50-grain loads.
Compared with Remington's UMC 50-grain JHP, the closest match in bullet type, the Federal starts 30 fps faster and holds its speed a little better. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Federal about 37 inches sideways and the UMC about 41. Compared with Remington's Premier AccuTip-V 50-grain, a polymer-tipped bullet, the Federal starts 50 fps faster but falls behind downrange. The same wind pushes the AccuTip-V about 30 inches at 500 yards, and zeroed at 100 yards the AccuTip-V drops about 37 inches at 500 to the Federal's 41. All three kick about the same in the same rifle.
Buy the American Eagle if you want a hollow-point varmint load that matches the UMC's recoil with a little less drift. Pick the UMC 50 if you shoot mostly at targets; Remington lists target shooting as its use. Pick the AccuTip-V if your shots run past 300 yards, where it drifts and drops less. For a copper hollow point with no lead core, Barnes' VOR-TX 50-grain TSX starts 20 fps slower, and Barnes markets it for medium game as well as varmints.
