Product Overview
Winchester markets Varmint-X for predator and varmint hunting, everything from prairie dogs to coyotes. This 55-grain load uses a polymer-tipped varmint bullet with a thin jacket. It is rated at a G1 BC of .255 and leaves the muzzle at 3,680 fps, slower than the 50-grain loads but carrying a heavier bullet.
Compared with Federal's Varmint & Predator 55-grain V-Max, the Varmint-X is almost the same load: the Federal starts 10 fps slower with the same G1 BC. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 29 inches sideways, and zeroed at 200 yards both drop about 34 inches at 500. Compared with Remington's Premier AccuTip-V 50-grain, the Varmint-X starts 120 fps slower and kicks about 17 percent harder in the same rifle. The heavier bullet gains almost nothing in the wind: the same breeze pushes the AccuTip-V about 30 inches at 500 yards.
Buy the Varmint-X if you want a 55-grain polymer tip that its maker markets for coyotes as well as prairie dogs. Federal's Varmint & Predator V-Max matches it so closely on paper that either one will do. Pick the AccuTip-V if lighter recoil matters more to you than bullet weight. If you need a lead-free bullet, Hornady's Superformance Varmint 35-grain NTX kicks about 48 percent less in the same rifle.
