Product Overview
Remington lists target shooting as the use for its UMC 50-grain JHP, and sells the UMC line for varmint hunting, target shooting and training. The bullet is a plain jacketed hollow point, rated at a G1 BC of .192, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,820 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 8 inches at 300.
Compared with Federal's American Eagle 50-grain JHP, the UMC is nearly a twin: the Federal starts 30 fps faster, and the two kick about the same in the same rifle. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the UMC about 41 inches sideways and the Federal about 37. Compared with Federal's Varmint & Predator 55-grain V-Max, a heavier polymer-tipped bullet, the UMC starts 150 fps faster, but the V-Max holds its speed better: the same wind pushes it about 29 inches at 500 yards. The V-Max also kicks about 15 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the UMC if you want a hollow point for target shooting and for varmints inside about 300 yards. Pick the American Eagle if you want nearly the same load with a little less drift. Pick the Varmint & Predator V-Max if you shoot varmints past 300 yards and can live with more recoil. If light recoil matters most, Hornady's Superformance Varmint 35-grain NTX kicks about 40 percent less in the same rifle.
