The .22-250 Remington is a varmint and predator cartridge for bolt rifles, shot at prairie dogs, groundhogs and coyotes. It is a .250 Savage case necked down to .224", the same bullet diameter as the .223. It began as a 1930s wildcat, and Remington made it a factory round in 1965. It runs about 400 fps faster than a .223 with the same bullet weight.
Loads here range from 35 to 60 grains and 3,240 to 4,450 fps. The light 35 to 50 grain V-Max and NTX loads are for prairie dogs and other small varmints at long range. The 55 grain V-Max and soft points are the standard coyote loads. The 50 grain TSX and 60 grain InterLock hold together for deeper penetration, for coyotes or for deer where a .22 centerfire is legal. Most .22-250 barrels use a 1:14 twist, which will not stabilize heavy 70 to 80 grain match bullets.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Pros
- Over .223 Remington: about 400 fps more with the same bullet, for flatter trajectory on varmints past 300 yards.
- Light 35 to 55 grain bullets fragment on small varmints, which limits ricochets in open country.
- Recoil is light enough to watch your own hits through the scope.
Cons
- Burns more powder than a .223 for each shot and wears barrel throats faster during long prairie dog days.
- Slow 1:14 twist in most rifles rules out the heavy high-BC bullets a 1:8 .223 AR can shoot.
- Some states bar .22 centerfires for deer, so it is often a varmint-only rifle. Check your state's hunting-cartridge rules.
