Federal's Range and Target 180-grain FMJ runs 1,000 fps and 400 ft-lbs at the muzzle. Power factor is 180, 15 points clear of the 165 USPSA major floor. From a 25-yard zero it drops 1.8 inches at 50 yards, where it is still doing 951 fps and 361 ft-lbs, and 12.7 inches at 100 yards at 909 fps and 331 ft-lbs.
Aguila's 180-grain ammunition is the only load here that is faster, at 1,050 fps and 441 ft-lbs, 50 fps and 41 ft-lbs ahead, and it produces about 8 percent more recoil energy in the same pistol. Remington UMC .40 S&W trails by 10 fps and 8 ft-lbs at 990 fps with 2 percent less recoil. Sellier & Bellot's 180-grain is 32 fps and 26 ft-lbs slower at the muzzle, and at 100 yards the Range and Target is 23 fps and 17 ft-lbs ahead with 0.9 inch less drop. If recoil is the complaint, Winchester USA Ready 165 delivers 60 fps more velocity with about the same recoil energy as Armscor. If you want a lead training bullet at nearly the same speed, HSM's Training 180-grain RNFP runs 985 fps with about 3 percent less recoil energy than the Range and Target.
