Remington UMC .40 S&W 180-grain FMJ: 990 fps, 392 ft-lbs, power factor 178. That clears the 165 USPSA major floor by 13 points. From a 25-yard zero the bullet is 1.8 inches low at 50 yards and 13.0 inches low at 100.
Three 180-grain ball loads bracket it. Aguila's 180-grain ammunition is 60 fps and 49 ft-lbs faster at 1,050 fps, and in the same pistol it produces about 10 percent more recoil energy than the UMC. Federal Range and Target is 10 fps and 8 ft-lbs ahead at 1,000 fps with about 2 percent more recoil, a gap no shooter will feel. Armscor's 180-grain is 37 fps and 29 ft-lbs slower at 953 fps, and the UMC produces about 7 percent more recoil energy than it. On power factor the UMC sits between them: 189 for Aguila, 180 for Federal, 172 for Armscor.
Buy this if you want a 180-grain range load with mid-set recoil and a solid major margin, a little softer than the 1,000 fps loads without giving up much energy. If your priority is the softest 180 ball here, Armscor's 953 fps is the answer, and the 13-point major margin becomes 6.5. If you want a plain lead training bullet at the same speed, HSM's Training 180-grain RNFP runs 985 fps, 5 fps off the UMC, with recoil within 1 percent.
