Aguila loads its .40 S&W 180-grain FMJ ammunition to 1,050 fps, the fastest muzzle velocity of any 180-grain ball load in this set, for 441 ft-lbs of energy. Power factor is 189, which clears the USPSA major floor of 165 by 24 points and leaves room for a short barrel that bleeds velocity. From a 25-yard zero the bullet sits 1.6 inches low at 50 yards and 11.6 inches low at 100.
Every other 180-grain ball load here is slower. Federal Range and Target runs 1,000 fps and 400 ft-lbs, 50 fps and 41 ft-lbs behind. Remington UMC .40 S&W gives up 60 fps and 49 ft-lbs at 990 fps. Sellier & Bellot's 180-grain sits at 968 fps and 374 ft-lbs, 82 fps and 67 ft-lbs back, and Armscor is slowest at 953 fps and 363 ft-lbs, 97 fps and 78 ft-lbs behind. The extra speed comes with recoil. In the same pistol the Aguila produces about 8 percent more recoil energy than Federal Range and Target, 10 percent more than Remington UMC, 14 percent more than Sellier & Bellot and 18 percent more than Armscor.
Buy this if you want the most velocity a 180-grain range load offers, either for the widest major margin or because you carry a full-power 180-grain hollow point and want practice ammunition that kicks like it. If a long session in a compact .40 S&W wears on your hands, Armscor's 180-grain produces about 15 percent less recoil energy than the Aguila and still makes major at a power factor of 172. HSM's Training 180-grain lead RNFP splits the difference at 985 fps with about 10 percent less recoil than the Aguila in the same pistol.
