Most .40 S&W handguns are the same service frames sold in 9mm, so choose size class first: full-size duty guns, compacts, or slim carry models like the M&P 40 Shield M2.0. Expect sharper recoil and a few fewer rounds than the 9mm version of the same pistol. Trigger type then splits the list between striker-fired guns and DA/SA hammer guns like the Sig P229.
