Product Overview
Magtech's 130gr FMJ is a lightweight .38 Special load designed for affordable range work. At 800 fps and 185 ft-lbs, it sits at the mild end of the .38 Special spectrum. The reduced velocity keeps recoil soft, which makes it a reasonable option for shooters who want to put rounds downrange without beating up their hands. The full metal jacket eliminates lead exposure at the muzzle and prevents barrel fouling from bare lead bullets.
New revolver owners still building comfort with the platform will appreciate how gentle this load feels. The 130gr bullet generates less muzzle flip than 158gr loads, so follow-up shots come faster. Compared to the Fiocchi 130gr FMJ at 950 fps, the Magtech runs 150 fps slower and produces noticeably less recoil. That lower velocity means it may not meet power factor requirements for some action shooting competitions, so check your division rules before committing to a case of it.
Magtech produces this load in Brazil using their own brass, primers, and powder. The brass cases are reloadable, which offsets some of the per-round cost for handloaders. The 130gr bullet is light enough that it will not over-stress older revolvers, including vintage Smith & Wesson and Colt models where +P loads are not recommended by the manufacturer.
- Very mild recoil at 800 fps and 185 ft-lbs is comfortable for new shooters and those with hand sensitivity
- FMJ bullet prevents lead fouling and reduces airborne lead compared to bare lead options
- 130gr bullet weight produces less muzzle flip than 158gr loads, speeding up follow-up shots
- Safe in all .38 Special revolvers, including older models not rated for +P
- 800 fps is 150 fps slower than the Fiocchi 130gr FMJ and may feel underpowered for recoil training
- Low velocity may not meet power factor thresholds for IDPA or USPSA revolver divisions
- No domestic manufacturing — imported from Brazil, which can create supply gaps during shipping disruptions
