Product Overview

Federal's American Eagle 130gr FMJ is a mid-velocity range load that splits the difference between soft-shooting and snappy. At 890 fps, it runs noticeably faster than the Winchester USA 130gr FMJ at 800 fps and produces 229 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That extra velocity gives this load a slightly flatter trajectory at typical indoor and outdoor range distances. It feeds cleanly in any .38 Special or .357 Magnum revolver.

The full metal jacket bullet eliminates lead fouling concerns during extended practice. Shooters who put several hundred rounds downrange in a single session will keep their bore cleaner with jacketed ammunition versus bare lead loads. Federal uses reliable primers and consistent powder charges in the American Eagle line, which translates to even velocity spreads and predictable point-of-impact shift from one cylinder to the next.

This load competes directly with the Remington UMC 130gr FMJ and the PMC Bronze 132gr FMJ. Remington's version runs at 800 fps with 185 ft-lbs, while PMC pushes its 132-grain bullet to 917 fps and 232 ft-lbs. Federal lands right in the middle on velocity and energy. For shooters who want a recognized name brand with moderate recoil and jacketed construction, this is a solid all-around practice pick for .38 Special revolvers.

Strengths
  • 890 fps provides more velocity than Winchester and Remington 130gr FMJ loads without harsh recoil
  • 229 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is solid for a standard-pressure .38 Special practice round
  • Full metal jacket keeps the bore clean and meets indoor range lead-free requirements
  • Federal's consistent primer and powder quality produce tight velocity spreads
Limitations
  • Higher velocity means slightly more felt recoil than the softer-shooting 800 fps alternatives
  • 130-grain bullet weight does not match the point of impact of heavier 158-grain defensive loads
  • American Eagle packaging can be hard to distinguish from other Federal product lines at a glance
