Hornady markets the Outfitter 150-grain CX for large game, as a lead-free load for areas "requiring nontraditional bullets." The CX is a polymer-tipped copper alloy bullet with no lead core. It is rated at a G1 BC of .455, leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps and still carries 1,923 ft-lbs at 300 yards.

Compared with Remington's Core-Lokt Tipped 150-grain, a polymer-tipped bullet with a lead core, the CX starts 130 fps slower and trails at distance. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the CX about 19 inches sideways and the Core-Lokt Tipped about 15. Compared with Winchester's Ballistic Silvertip 150-grain, also polymer-tipped with a lead core, the CX starts 100 fps slower but kicks about 4 percent less in the same rifle. Zeroed at 100 yards, the CX drops about 47 inches at 500 and the Silvertip about 42.

Buy the Outfitter CX if you hunt where lead-free bullets are required, or if you simply want a bullet with no lead core. Pick the Core-Lokt Tipped if lead is allowed where you hunt and you want the flatter path and more speed; Remington markets it for big game. Pick the Ballistic Silvertip for the same reasons if you prefer Winchester's tipped bullet; Winchester markets it for big game too.
