How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Nosler sells its Match Grade 105-grain as a target and match load. It uses Nosler's RDF bullet, a match hollow point with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .571. At 3,050 fps it has the fastest start of the 105- to 108-grain match loads it is compared with.

Compared with Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match, the Nosler starts 90 fps faster and stays ahead all the way to 500 yards. At that distance, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Nosler about 14 inches sideways and the 108 about 16; that is how far each bullet lands to one side of the aiming point if you make no correction. The two kick almost alike, the 108 about 2 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with the Federal Gold Medal 105-grain Berger Hybrid, the Nosler starts 100 fps faster and shoots flatter: zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 42 inches at 500 and the Federal about 46.

Buy the Nosler if you shoot targets at 300 to 500 yards and wind and drop are what make you miss. Pick Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match if you want Hornady's polymer-tipped bullet and can live with about 2 more inches of wind drift at 500 yards. Pick the Federal Gold Medal 105-grain Berger Hybrid if you want Federal's competition load with a little less recoil. If you also hunt, Hornady's Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X starts at the same 3,050 fps, and Hornady markets it for medium game.

Strengths
  • Still moving 2,265 fps at 500 yards, 121 fps faster than Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match
  • Its G1 BC of .571 is higher than the .536 of the Federal Gold Medal 105-grain Berger Hybrid
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 23 inches at 400; the Sig Sauer Elite Performance 107-grain OTM drops about 25
Limitations
  • Kicks about 4 percent more than the Federal Gold Medal 105-grain Berger Hybrid in the same rifle
  • At 300 yards its edge in the wind is small: about 5 inches of drift, the same as Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match
  • Kicks about 3 percent more than the Hornady BLACK 105-grain BTHP in the same rifle
