Product Overview
Hornady sells its 108-grain ELD Match as a target and match load. The ELD Match is Hornady's polymer-tipped match bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .536, and this load starts it at 2,960 fps.
Compared with the Federal Gold Medal 109-grain Berger LRHT, the Hornady trades a little wind for a flatter path. The Federal starts 60 fps slower but carries a higher G1 BC, .568 against .536. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Hornady about 16 inches sideways and the Federal about 15, which is how far each lands to one side of the aim point without a correction. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Hornady drops about 45 inches at 500 and the Federal about 47. The two kick the same in the same rifle. Compared with the Nosler Match Grade 105-grain, the Hornady starts 90 fps slower, and the same wind pushes the Nosler about 14 inches at 500 yards.
Buy the 108 if you shoot targets out to 500 yards and want Hornady's polymer-tipped bullet with a slightly flatter path than the Federal Gold Medal 109-grain. Pick the Federal if wind gives you more trouble than drop. Pick the Nosler Match Grade 105-grain if you want less of both; it drifts about 2 inches less and drops about 4 inches less at 500 yards. If you also hunt, Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X for medium game.
