Product Overview
Federal markets its Gold Medal 105-grain for competition, long-range and target shooting. It is loaded with Berger's Hybrid Target bullet, a match hollow point with a boat tail, which Federal rates at a G1 BC of .536, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,950 fps. Of the 105- to 108-grain match loads it is compared with, it kicks the least in the same rifle, though only by a little.
Compared with Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match, the Federal carries the same G1 BC of .536 and starts only 10 fps slower, so the two fly almost alike. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each about 16 inches sideways, which is how far the bullet lands from where you aimed if you do not correct for it. The Hornady kicks about 6 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with the Nosler Match Grade 105-grain, the Federal starts 100 fps slower and falls behind downrange. The same wind pushes the Nosler about 14 inches, and zeroed at 100 yards the Federal drops about 46 inches at 500 against about 42 for the Nosler.
Buy the Federal if you shoot long-range targets and want a competition load that matches Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match downrange with a little less recoil. Pick the 108 if your drop data is already built around it, since switching between the two gains you little. Pick the Nosler Match Grade 105-grain if wind is your main problem; it drifts about 2 inches less at 500 yards.
