How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Hornady sells its BLACK 105-grain BTHP as a target and match load. The bullet is a hollow point with a boat tail, the standard shape for a match bullet, and Hornady rates it at a G1 BC of .530. It leaves the muzzle at 2,960 fps.

Compared with Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match, the BLACK gives up almost nothing. Both start at the same speed, and at 500 yards a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 16 inches sideways. That is how far the bullet lands to one side of where you aimed if you make no correction for the wind. The 108 kicks about 6 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with the Nosler Match Grade 105-grain, the BLACK starts 90 fps slower and gives up ground downrange. The same wind pushes the Nosler about 14 inches at 500 yards, and zeroed at 100 yards the BLACK drops about 46 inches at 500 against about 42 for the Nosler.

Buy the BLACK if you shoot paper and steel out to 500 yards and want a 105-grain match load that keeps pace with Hornady's ELD Match while kicking a little less. Pick the 108-grain ELD Match if your drop data is already built around it; the two fly so alike that switching gains you little. Pick the Nosler Match Grade 105-grain if wind is what makes you miss, since it drifts about 2 inches less at 500 yards. If you also hunt, Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 103-grain ELD-X for medium game.

Strengths
  • Kicks about 3 percent less than the Sig Sauer Elite Performance 107-grain OTM in the same rifle
  • Holds wind as well as the Federal Gold Medal 105-grain Berger Hybrid, about 10 inches of drift at 400 yards for both
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 25 inches at 400, the same as Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match
Limitations
  • The Nosler Match Grade 105-grain is still moving 2,265 fps at 500 yards, 129 fps faster than the BLACK
  • Its G1 BC of .530 is a little lower than the .536 of Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, the Nosler Match Grade 105-grain drops about 2 inches less at 400 yards
