Product Overview
Federal markets its Gold Medal 109-grain for competition, long-range and target shooting. It is loaded with Berger's Long Range Hybrid Target, a match hollow point with a boat tail, which Federal rates at a G1 BC of .568. At 2,900 fps it has the slowest start of the match loads it is compared with, but it holds its speed well.
Compared with the Hornady BLACK 105-grain BTHP, the Federal starts 60 fps slower, yet both are moving 2,136 fps at 500 yards. At that distance a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Federal about 15 inches sideways and the BLACK about 16; that is how far each bullet lands from where you aimed if you do not correct. The BLACK shoots a little flatter: zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 46 inches at 500 and the Federal about 47. Compared with the Barnes Precision Match 112-grain, the Federal carries 3 fewer grains of bullet, starts 60 fps slower and kicks about 7 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Federal if you shoot long-range targets and wind gives you more trouble than drop. Pick the Hornady BLACK 105-grain BTHP if you want about 5 percent less recoil and a slightly flatter path. Pick the Barnes Precision Match 112-grain if you want the heavier bullet and don't mind the extra recoil. Hornady's 108-grain ELD Match is the other close choice: it kicks the same and drops about 1.5 inches less at 500 yards.
