HSM markets its 430-grain Bear Load for big game hunting. HSM calls the bullet a round nose flat point gas check: a round-nosed bullet with a flat tip and a gas check, a small metal cup, on its base. HSM rates it at a G1 BC of .23, and it leaves the muzzle at 1,801 fps with 3,098 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Grizzly's +P 460-grain WFNGC, the Bear Load carries 30 fewer grains and leaves the muzzle 49 fps slower, but it kicks about 15 percent less in the same rifle. Grizzly labels its load +P, so check that your rifle is rated for +P before choosing it. Compared with Hornady's 325-grain LEVERevolution FTX, the Bear Load drops more and drifts more. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Bear Load drops about 14 inches at 200 yards and the Hornady about 11. At 200 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Bear Load about 12 inches sideways and the Hornady about 10.
Buy the Bear Load if you want a heavy 430-grain bullet for big game at 200 yards or less. Pick Grizzly's +P 460-grain WFNGC if you want the heavier bullet and your rifle is rated for +P. Pick Hornady's 325-grain LEVERevolution FTX if you want a flatter path out to 200 yards and less recoil. If recoil is your main concern, Fiocchi's 300-grain HPFN, which Fiocchi markets for big game, kicks about 49 percent less in the same rifle.
