Product Overview
Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 212-grain ELD-X for large game. The ELD-X is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a lead core and a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .663. It leaves the muzzle at 2,860 fps and still carries 2,285 ft-lbs of energy at 500 yards.
Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX Long Range 208-grain LRX, the ELD-X has almost the same bullet weight and the same muzzle speed, and the two fly nearly the same path. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD-X about 13 inches sideways and the Barnes about 14. The Barnes kicks about 4 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with Berger's Elite Hunter 245-grain, the ELD-X starts 140 fps faster, but the heavier Berger holds up better in the wind: the same 500-yard wind pushes the Berger about 11 inches. The Berger also kicks about 26 percent harder.
Buy the ELD-X if you hunt large game with shots out to 500 yards and want less wind drift than Hornady's Outfitter 190-grain CX without the recoil of the Berger. Pick the Barnes if you want a copper bullet with no lead core; Barnes markets it for big game and medium game. Pick the Berger if wind is the main problem and heavy recoil does not bother you. If you also shoot steel and paper, Hornady's Match 225-grain ELD Match is Hornady's target load, and the same wind pushes it about 11 inches at 500 yards.
