How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Berger sells its Elite Hunter 245-grain as a hunting load, and it is the .300 PRC hunting load to pick when wind is the main problem. The Elite Hunter is Berger's boat-tail hunting bullet with a hollow point at the nose, rated at a G1 BC of .807. It leaves the muzzle at 2,720 fps, the slowest start of any .300 PRC load on the site, and its heavy bullet also kicks the hardest.

Compared with Hornady's Precision Hunter 212-grain ELD-X, the Berger starts slower but holds up better in the wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Berger about 11 inches sideways and the ELD-X about 13. The ELD-X kicks about 21 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX Long Range 208-grain LRX, the Berger drifts less but drops more: the same wind pushes the Barnes about 14 inches at 500 yards, and zeroed at 100 yards, the Berger drops about 50 inches at 500 and the Barnes about 47. The Barnes kicks about 24 percent less.

Buy the Berger if you hunt open country where wind at 400 and 500 yards is the main problem, and heavy recoil does not bother you. Pick the Precision Hunter ELD-X for a flatter path and less recoil; Hornady markets it for large game. Pick the Barnes if you want a copper bullet with no lead core. If recoil matters most, Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain Swift Scirocco kicks about 39 percent less in the same rifle.

Strengths
  • Carries 2,608 ft-lbs at 500 yards, against 2,285 for Hornady's Precision Hunter 212-grain ELD-X
  • At 400 yards, a 10 mph crosswind pushes it about 7 inches, against about 9 for Hornady's Outfitter 190-grain CX
  • Still moving 2,189 fps at 500 yards, faster than the 2,174 of Barnes' VOR-TX Long Range 208-grain LRX despite its slower start
Limitations
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 50 inches at 500, against about 43 for Hornady's Outfitter 190-grain CX
  • Kicks about 49 percent more than Hornady's Outfitter 190-grain CX in the same rifle
  • Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 28 inches at 400, against about 26 for Hornady's Precision Hunter 212-grain ELD-X
