Product Overview
Hornady markets its Outfitter 190-grain CX for large game, and sells the Outfitter line for hunting in areas that require lead-free bullets. The CX is Hornady's polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .575. It leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps and is still moving 2,228 fps at 500 yards, faster at that distance than any other .300 PRC hunting load on the site.
Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX Long Range 208-grain LRX, the other copper bullet with no lead core, the Outfitter shoots flatter. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Outfitter drops about 43 inches at 500 and the Barnes about 47. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 14 inches sideways. The Barnes kicks about 14 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Weatherby's Select Plus 180-grain Swift Scirocco, the Outfitter starts 25 fps slower but is the faster of the two by 200 yards, and it gives up less to the wind: the same 500-yard wind pushes the Weatherby about 16 inches. The Weatherby kicks about 9 percent less.
Buy the Outfitter if you hunt where lead-free bullets are required, or simply prefer copper, and want a fast, flat path out to 500 yards. Pick the Barnes if you want a heavier copper bullet; Barnes markets it for big game and medium game. Pick the Weatherby if light recoil matters most and you do not need a lead-free bullet. If wind at 500 yards is the main worry and a lead core is fine, Hornady's Precision Hunter 212-grain ELD-X drifts about 13 inches in the same wind.
