Best .300 PRC Ammo

Every load we price, sorted by cost per round delivered to your state

We track 6 .300 PRC loads from 1 dealer. The cheapest delivered to AR, shipping included, is Hornady Precision Hunter .300 PRC 212gr ELD-X Ammo at $2.40 a round. By use: Hunting from $2.40 and Competition from $2.60.

The .300 PRC is Hornady's non-belted .30 caliber magnum for long-range hunting and extreme-range target shooting, standardized by SAAMI in 2018 and based on the .375 Ruger case. It was designed to seat long 200 to 230 grain bullets without crowding the powder space, which is why it needs a magnum-length action with a 3.70" overall length.

Loads on this page run 180 to 225 grains at 2,810 to 3,025 fps. For elk and moose, the 212 grain ELD-X and 208 grain LRX are the long-range hunting loads, and the 190 grain CX and 180 grain Scirocco are lighter options that fly flatter at hunting distances. The 225 grain ELD Match is for targets. The .300 PRC does not interchange with the .300 Win Mag or .300 Norma Magnum.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Pros

  • Against .300 Win Mag: the longer 3.70-inch cartridge seats 212 to 230 grain bullets without crowding the powder, and factory loads are built around them.
  • Heavy high-BC bullets keep energy for elk at long range.
  • Against .300 Win Mag: the non-belted case headspaces on the shoulder, which suits precise chambers and handloading.

Cons

  • Against .300 Win Mag: needs a magnum-length action, so fewer rifles and a longer bolt throw.
  • Against 7mm PRC: more recoil for a modest gain at hunting ranges.
  • Heavy recoil and blast make long practice sessions tiring without a brake.
  • The big powder charge erodes throats well before a .308 or .30-06 barrel would wear out.
