Product Overview
Barnes markets its VOR-TX Long Range 208-grain LRX for big game and medium game, and it suits hunters who want a heavy copper bullet with no lead core. The LRX is Barnes' polymer-tipped copper bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .633. It leaves the muzzle at 2,860 fps. Of the two copper .300 PRC loads on the site, it carries the heavier bullet.
Compared with Hornady's Precision Hunter 212-grain ELD-X, the Barnes leaves the muzzle at the same speed with a slightly lower G1 BC than the ELD-X's .663. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Barnes about 14 inches sideways and the ELD-X about 13, a small gap. The two kick almost the same in the same rifle. Compared with Hornady's Outfitter 190-grain CX, the other copper bullet with no lead core, the Barnes starts 140 fps slower and drops more: zeroed at 100 yards, the Barnes drops about 47 inches at 500 and the Outfitter about 43. The same wind pushes the Outfitter about as far as the Barnes, and the Outfitter kicks about 12 percent less.
Buy the Barnes if you want a copper bullet with no lead core and would rather have the heavier bullet than the Outfitter's extra speed. Pick the Precision Hunter ELD-X if a lead core is fine; Hornady markets it for large game, and it matches the Barnes at the muzzle. Pick the Outfitter if a flatter path and lighter recoil matter more than bullet weight.
