Product Overview
Hornady markets its 190-grain Sub-X subsonic load for personal defense and rates it for use with or without a suppressor. The Sub-X is a polymer-tipped expanding bullet designed to work at subsonic speed. It carries a G1 BC of .437 and leaves the muzzle at 1,050 fps, under the speed of sound.
Compared with Winchester's Super Suppressed 200-grain Open Tip, the Sub-X flies almost the same path. Zeroed at 100 yards, both land about 33 inches low at 200 yards, so past 100 yards you need to know the distance. A steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 5 inches sideways at 200 yards. The Winchester leaves the muzzle 10 fps faster. Compared with Sellier & Bellot's 200-grain Subsonic FMJ, the Sub-X gives up a little: the S&B lands about 32 inches low at 200 yards, and the same wind pushes it about 4 inches. The S&B starts at the same speed as the Winchester.
Buy the Sub-X if you want an expanding bullet in a subsonic load, for the personal-defense use Hornady markets it for. Pick the Winchester if your shooting is mostly at the range; Winchester sells it for target and range shooting, and it flies the same path. Pick the S&B for range and match work, which is what Sellier & Bellot markets it for, if an inch less drop at 200 yards matters to you. Ammo Inc's 220-grain Stelth carries a bullet 30 grains heavier than the Sub-X and starts with 39 ft-lbs more energy. If you hunt and don't need to stay subsonic, Federal markets its 150-grain Power-Shok for big game, and it leaves the muzzle at 1,900 fps.
