Product Overview

Hornady's Sub-X bullet was engineered from scratch to expand at subsonic velocities where conventional hollow points fail. The 190gr projectile at 1,050 fps uses a long polymer tip and a flat lead core designed to initiate expansion below 1,100 fps. Most hollow points need 1,600 fps or more to open reliably. The Sub-X does it at nearly half that speed, which makes the Hornady Subsonic .300 Blackout the most capable suppressed hunting load on the market.

Hog hunters running suppressed .300 Blackout carbines at night are the primary audience for this round. The subsonic velocity eliminates the sonic crack and pairs naturally with thermal or night-vision optics for close-range work inside 100 yards. The Sub-X bullet expands to roughly twice its original diameter at impact speeds typical of 50-75 yard shots, creating wound channels that put hogs down without the noise that sends the rest of the sounder running.

The 0.437 G1 ballistic coefficient keeps the 190gr bullet stable in flight and resistant to crosswinds at typical engagement distances. Hornady loads this in new brass with their standard primer, and feeding reliability in AR-pattern magazines is consistent. For any application where the shot needs to be quiet and the bullet needs to expand, this is the load to use. It costs more than FMJ subsonic options, but no other subsonic .300 Blackout round matches its terminal performance.

Strengths
  • Sub-X bullet is engineered to expand at subsonic velocities below 1,100 fps where conventional hollow points fail
  • 0.437 G1 ballistic coefficient provides excellent stability and wind resistance for a subsonic projectile
  • Best terminal performance of any subsonic .300 Blackout factory load, expanding to roughly twice original diameter
  • Ideal for suppressed hog hunting at night with thermal or night-vision optics inside 100 yards
Limitations
  • Most expensive subsonic .300 Blackout option, not practical for volume range shooting
  • 465 ft-lbs of muzzle energy limits effective hunting range to about 75 yards for reliable kills
  • 190gr bullet at 1,050 fps produces a steep trajectory arc, requiring careful zero and holdover data past 50 yards
  • Not widely stocked in brick-and-mortar stores compared to Winchester or Federal subsonic loads
