Winchester says it engineered the Deer Season XP 150-grain specifically for deer hunters. The load uses Winchester's Extreme Point, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet. It is rated at a G1 BC of .215 and leaves the muzzle at 2,390 fps. By 200 yards it has slowed to 1,678 fps and still carries 938 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Winchester's Ballistic Silvertip 150-grain, the other polymer-tipped Winchester load at this weight, the Deer Season XP falls a little behind past 200 yards. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes the Deer Season XP about 21 inches sideways and the Ballistic Silvertip about 19. Compared with Federal's Power-Shok 150-grain, a plain soft point with no tip, there is almost nothing between them: zeroed at 100 yards, both drop about 27 inches at 300, and they kick the same in the same rifle.
Buy the Deer Season XP if you hunt deer and your shots stay inside 200 yards, where it keeps pace with the Ballistic Silvertip and the Power-Shok. Pick the Ballistic Silvertip if your shots run out toward 300 yards; it holds 1,448 fps there, against 1,390 for the Deer Season XP.
