Federal markets its Power-Shok 150-grain for big game. The bullet is a jacketed soft point, a lead-core bullet with exposed lead at the nose and no polymer tip. It is rated at a G1 BC of .218 and leaves the muzzle at 2,390 fps. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 7 inches at 200.
Compared with Winchester's 150-grain Power-Point, the other plain soft point at this weight, the Power-Shok is a twin on paper: the same 2,390 fps start, the same G1 BC and the same recoil in the same rifle. Compared with Winchester's Deer Season XP 150-grain, which uses Winchester's polymer-tipped Extreme Point, the Power-Shok is just as flat and a touch ahead on energy. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes either bullet about 21 inches sideways. At 200 yards the Power-Shok still carries 947 ft-lbs, against 938 for the Deer Season XP.
Buy the Power-Shok if you want a plain soft point for big game and would rather shoot Federal's. Pick the Super-X 150-grain Power-Point if you prefer Winchester's; the numbers do not separate them. Pick the Deer Season XP if you hunt deer and want a polymer tip in the load Winchester built for deer hunters. Pick Winchester's Ballistic Silvertip 150-grain if your shots run out toward 300 yards; the same wind pushes it about 19 inches there. For a hollow point at the same speed, Winchester's Super-X 150-grain JHP also leaves the muzzle at 2,390 fps.
