Federal builds American Eagle 55-grain for the range and calls it ideal for target practice, listing competition and long-range shooting among its uses. It carries a 55-grain full metal jacket bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .269, and leaves the muzzle at 3,240 fps. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes it about 33 inches sideways.
Compared with Hornady Frontier 55-grain, which leaves the muzzle at the same speed with a G1 BC of .243, the American Eagle holds up better past 300 yards. The same wind pushes the Frontier about 38 inches at 500 yards, and zeroed at 100 yards the American Eagle drops about 51 inches at 500 against about 55 for the Frontier. Compared with Remington UMC 55-grain MC, rated at a G1 BC of .202, the gap is wider: the same wind pushes the UMC about 49 inches at 500 yards, and it drops about 65 inches from the same zero. Neither kicks any differently in the same rifle.
Buy American Eagle if you shoot paper and steel out to 500 yards and want a 55-grain range load that gives up the least to wind and drop. Pick Hornady Frontier 55-grain, PMC Bronze 55-grain or Remington UMC 55-grain MC for close drills inside 200 yards, where the gap is small. For varmints, Hornady's Varmint Express 55-grain V-Max is the polymer-tipped load Hornady markets for varmints, and it leaves the muzzle at the same speed.
