How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Hornady aims its Frontier line at plinking and target shooting, all the way to law enforcement training. This 55-grain load uses a full metal jacket bullet, the plain jacketed bullet most range ammunition uses, rated at a G1 BC of .243, and leaves the muzzle at 3,240 fps. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes it about 38 inches sideways.

Compared with Winchester USA 55-grain, which leaves the muzzle at the same speed with a G1 BC of .255, the Frontier gives up a little downrange: the same wind pushes the Winchester about 35 inches at 500 yards. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Frontier drops about 55 inches at 500 and the Winchester about 53. Compared with Wolf WPA 55-grain, the Frontier is level at the muzzle, 3,240 fps against 3,241, and kicks the same in the same rifle. The difference is the Wolf's steel case, which cannot be reloaded and which some indoor ranges ban.

Buy the Frontier for plinking, drills and paper out to 300 yards, where it drops within half an inch of Winchester USA 55-grain. Pick the Winchester if you stretch out to 500 yards and want a few inches less drift. Pick Wolf WPA 55-grain if your range allows steel cases and you don't reload. For varmints, Hornady's Varmint Express 55-grain V-Max is the polymer-tipped load Hornady markets for varmints, at the same muzzle speed as the Frontier.

Strengths
  • Leaves the muzzle 40 fps faster than PMC Bronze 55-grain
  • Drops about 55 inches at 500 yards from a 100-yard zero, against about 57 for PMC Bronze 55-grain
  • Its brass case is welcome at ranges that turn away the steel case of Tula 55-grain
Limitations
  • Winchester USA 55-grain drifts about 21 inches at 400 yards in a 10 mph crosswind, against about 22 for the Frontier
  • STV Technology's Scorpio 55-grain leaves the muzzle 8 fps faster, at 3,248 fps
  • Kicks about 1 percent more than PMC Bronze 55-grain in the same rifle
