Remington markets UMC for target shooting, training and other high-volume shooting, and for varmint hunting. This load carries Remington's 55-grain Metal Case (MC) bullet, a full metal jacket design, rated at a G1 BC of .202, and leaves the muzzle at 3,240 fps.
Compared with Winchester USA 55-grain, which leaves the muzzle at the same speed with a G1 BC of .255, the UMC loses ground past 200 yards. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the UMC about 49 inches sideways and the Winchester about 35. Zeroed at 100 yards, the UMC drops about 65 inches at 500 and the Winchester about 53. Compared with PMC Bronze 55-grain, which starts 40 fps slower, the UMC's head start is gone by 100 yards, where the PMC carries 2,800 fps and the UMC 2,759. The two kick about the same in the same rifle.
Buy the UMC for high-volume practice at 200 yards and closer, where it drops within half an inch of Winchester USA 55-grain. Pick the Winchester or PMC Bronze 55-grain if you shoot at 300 yards and past, where the UMC's extra drift starts to show. For varmint hunting past 200 yards, Hornady's Varmint Express 55-grain V-Max is the polymer-tipped load Hornady markets for varmints; it leaves the muzzle at the same speed and drifts no more than the Winchester.
