Product Overview
STV Technology markets its Scorpio 55-grain for sport and recreational shooting, and for self-defense. It carries a 55-grain full metal jacket bullet, a plain jacketed bullet for paper and steel targets, in a brass case, and leaves the muzzle at 3,248 fps.
Compared with Federal American Eagle 55-grain, the Scorpio starts 8 fps faster and kicks the same in the same rifle, so at the muzzle the two are close to identical. Federal markets American Eagle for target practice. Compared with Hornady Black 62-grain, the Scorpio starts 148 fps faster with a bullet 7 grains lighter, and the Black kicks about 20 percent harder in the same rifle. Hornady says its BLACK line is designed to fit, feed and function in a variety of platforms.
Buy the Scorpio for range and recreational shooting when you want a 55-grain bullet in a brass case. Pick Tula 55-grain if your range accepts steel cases and you don't reload; it leaves the muzzle 7 fps slower and kicks the same. Pick Hornady Black 62-grain if you want the heavier bullet and can take the extra recoil. For varmints, Hornady's Varmint Express 55-grain V-Max carries a polymer-tipped bullet that Hornady markets for varmints, and it leaves the muzzle 8 fps slower than the Scorpio.
