Product Overview
Federal markets its Varmint & Predator 55-grain V-Max for varmints and predators, from prairie dogs to coyotes. The V-Max is a polymer-tipped varmint bullet; this one is rated at a G1 BC of .255 and leaves the muzzle at 3,670 fps. It trades some starting speed against the 50-grain loads for a heavier bullet.
Compared with Winchester's Varmint-X 55-grain, another polymer-tipped load marketed for prairie dogs and coyotes, the Federal is close to identical: the Winchester starts 10 fps faster with the same G1 BC. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 29 inches sideways. Compared with Hornady's Superformance Varmint 50-grain V-Max, the Federal starts 330 fps slower. Zeroed at 200 yards, the Federal drops about 34 inches at 500 and the Hornady about 29, and the same wind pushes the Hornady about 28 inches. The Federal kicks about 9 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Federal if you want a 55-grain polymer tip for the prairie dog and coyote shooting Federal markets it for. The Varmint-X matches it so closely that either one will serve. Pick the Hornady 50-grain V-Max if you want a flatter path and a little less recoil. If you need a lead-free bullet, Hornady's Superformance Varmint 35-grain NTX starts 780 fps faster.
