Product Overview
Hornady markets its Superformance Varmint 35-grain NTX as a varmint load. NTX is Hornady's lead-free bullet with a polymer tip. It is rated at a G1 BC of .177 and leaves the muzzle at 4,450 fps.
That light bullet trades staying power for speed. By 300 yards it has slowed to 2,597 fps. Zeroed at 200 yards, it drops about 4 inches at 300 and about 13 at 400, so the path stays flat through the middle distances. Wind is the bigger problem for a bullet this light. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes it about 22 inches sideways, more than it drops at that distance from the 200-yard zero.
Buy the NTX if you need a lead-free bullet for varmints and your shots stay inside about 300 yards, where its speed keeps the path flat and wind has less time to act. If you do not need a lead-free bullet, Remington's UMC 45-grain JHP is the nearest light hollow point, though it starts 450 fps slower and kicks about 44 percent more in the same rifle. Pick Barnes' VOR-TX 50-grain TSX, a copper hollow point with no lead core, if you want a heavier lead-free load that Barnes also markets for medium game; it starts 620 fps slower.
- Still moving 3,128 fps at 200 yards
- Drops only about 1 inch at 200 yards from a 100-yard zero
- Lead-free 35-grain bullet, for shooters who need or prefer to avoid lead
- Drifts about 38 inches at 500 yards in a 10 mph crosswind
- Slows to 1,705 fps by 500 yards
- Drops about 33 inches at 500 yards from a 100-yard zero
