Product Overview
Speer Lawman is the training line built to match Speer Gold Dot duty ammo. This 180gr TMJ at 1,000 fps and 400 ft-lbs of energy gives you the same bullet weight and similar velocity to Gold Dot 180gr loads. The whole point is to practice with something that feels like your carry ammo without paying hollow point prices. If your department or your holster runs Gold Dot .40, this is the range companion it was designed to be.
The TMJ (Total Metal Jacket) bullet fully encloses the lead core, including the base. Standard FMJ leaves the base exposed, which means vaporized lead at the back of the bullet every time you fire. TMJ eliminates that. Indoor ranges care about this. If you shoot indoors regularly or put high volume through your gun in any setting, the reduced lead exposure is a real benefit, not a marketing gimmick.
At 1,000 fps, this load sits in the middle of the 180gr pack. It is slower than Aguila (1,050 fps) but faster than Sellier & Bellot (968 fps) and Armscor (953 fps). The trade-off is typical Speer consistency. Velocity spreads tend to be tight, and feeding is reliable across Glock, SIG, S&W, and other common .40 platforms. The HSM Training 180gr RNFP at 985 fps is the closest competitor, but the round-nose flat-point shape can be pickier in some magazines.
- TMJ bullet fully encloses the lead core, reducing airborne lead at indoor ranges
- Matched to Speer Gold Dot duty loads in weight and velocity for realistic carry training
- Tight velocity spreads give consistent recoil from shot to shot
- Clean-burning powder keeps the gun running longer between cleanings
- Costs more per round than basic FMJ options from Federal, Winchester, or Aguila
- 1,000 fps is on the mild side for 180gr .40 S&W, trailing Aguila by 50 fps
- TMJ does not expand, so this is a training-only round with no defensive application
