Product Overview
Hornady Critical Defense was designed for concealed carry, and the .40 S&W 165gr FTX version targets that mission specifically. The polymer tip in the hollow point cavity prevents clogging from clothing fibers, which is the main reason standard JHP bullets sometimes fail to expand. At 1,045 fps and 400 ft-lbs, it is one of the milder .40 S&W defensive loads available. That reduced velocity makes a real difference in felt recoil, especially in compact frames where every foot-pound of energy translates directly into snap.
The FTX bullet was built around the clothing barrier problem. Denim, leather, and heavy winter layers can pack into a hollow point cavity and turn an expanding bullet into a non-expanding one. The red polymer insert fills the cavity so fibers cannot get in. When the bullet hits tissue, the polymer tip compresses into the lead core and initiates expansion from the inside out. This gives Critical Defense more consistent expansion across a range of barrier conditions than most traditional JHP designs.
Everyday carry in the warmer months or as a year-round option in a subcompact .40 is the ideal use case. The nickel-plated brass resists tarnish from body heat and humidity. The lower velocity means less muzzle flash and less concussive blast in enclosed spaces like a hallway or vehicle interior. Hornady loads Critical Defense to standard pressure, so it will not accelerate wear on older .40 S&W pistols the way +P-rated loads can in other calibers.
- Polymer FTX tip prevents hollow point clogging from clothing fibers, denim, and leather
- 1,045 fps velocity produces mild recoil that is easy to manage in compact .40 S&W pistols
- Nickel-plated brass resists corrosion during months of loaded carry in a holster
- Standard-pressure loading is safe for all .40 S&W pistols including older designs
- Consistent expansion across bare gel, heavy clothing, and light barrier scenarios
- 400 ft-lbs of energy is on the low end for .40 S&W defensive ammunition
- Not designed for hard barrier penetration — auto glass and plywood may cause the tip to deform prematurely
- Polymer tip adds cost over conventional JHP designs with comparable terminal results in bare gel
