Product Overview
Hornady Critical Defense 165-grain is the softest of the premium 165s here: 1,045 fps and 400 ft-lbs. FTX is Hornady's polymer-tipped hollow point, made for carry use. Power factor 172 clears the 165 major floor by 7, about the same margin as PMC Bronze 165. From a 25-yard zero it drops 1.7 inches at 50 yards and 12.0 at 100, carrying 971 fps and 346 ft-lbs at 50 and 914 fps and 306 ft-lbs at 100. In the same compact pistol it produces about 12 percent less recoil energy than Federal HST 165 and 15 percent less than Speer Gold Dot 165.
Federal HST 165 starts 85 fps and 68 ft-lbs ahead and is still 41 ft-lbs ahead at 100 yards, where it drops 1.7 inches less. Speer Gold Dot 165 and Remington Golden Saber 165 start 105 fps and 84 ft-lbs ahead, are 58 ft-lbs ahead at 50 and 46 at 100, and drop 2.0 inches less there. Remington HTP 155 tops the muzzle numbers by 160 fps and 100 ft-lbs; the Critical Defense recoils about 11 percent less than it. Its speed peer is PMC Bronze 165 at 1,040 fps and 396 ft-lbs, 5 fps and 4 ft-lbs behind, with recoil within 1 percent.
Buy it if you want the least recoil of the premium 165s and will give up 68 to 84 ft-lbs at the muzzle to HST and Gold Dot for it. It also has the closest practice match here: Winchester 165-grain FMJ Range runs 1,060 fps and 412 ft-lbs, 15 fps and 12 ft-lbs more, with about 2 percent more recoil energy in the same pistol. If you want energy at distance, Federal HST 165 holds 347 ft-lbs at 100 yards to this load's 306, for the extra recoil.
