Hornady's Custom .357 Mag load carries the 158-grain XTP, a jacketed hollow point Hornady builds for hunting and defense. The published velocity is 1,250 fps for 548 ft-lbs, though Hornady's figure is not measured under the same conditions as the other makers', so treat it as a published number rather than a like-for-like one. Power factor is 198, 33 points over the 165 USPSA major floor. From a 25-yard zero the bullet is 1.0 inch low at 50 yards and 8.1 inches low at 100.
On muzzle energy and power factor it sits in the middle of the 158 group: 12 ft-lbs and 2 power-factor points behind Sellier & Bellot 158-grain soft point, 9 ft-lbs ahead of Federal Fusion 158-grain SP, and 26 ft-lbs ahead of Fiocchi Defense Dynamics 158-grain JHP. Sellier & Bellot 158-grain SJHP is the outlier at 619 ft-lbs and a 210 power factor, 71 ft-lbs ahead, with about 11 percent more recoil energy in the same revolver.
