Product Overview
Hornady Custom 158gr XTP is a heavyweight defensive load that prioritizes penetration over velocity. At 1,250 fps, this is not the fastest .357 Mag on the shelf, but the 158gr XTP hollow point at that speed generates 548 ft-lbs of energy and penetrates deeply in soft tissue. The XTP bullet expands to roughly 1.5 times its original diameter while retaining most of its weight. That combination of deep penetration and moderate expansion makes it effective against larger threats where reaching vital organs through heavy bone and muscle is the priority.
Hunters who pursue deer-class game with a .357 Mag revolver should look closely at this load. The 158gr XTP at magnum velocity will take whitetail cleanly at distances under 75 yards from a 6-inch revolver. The controlled expansion keeps the bullet together on shoulder hits where lighter, faster hollow points sometimes fragment. Out of a lever-action rifle barrel, the added velocity pushes this load into even more capable territory for close-range deer hunting in thick timber.
For woods carry in bear country, the 158gr weight and deep penetration characteristics make this a better choice than lighter 125gr loads. A heavy bullet at moderate velocity penetrates straighter and deeper than a light bullet at high velocity. The brass cases are high quality and reload well for handloaders who want to fine-tune their own 158gr XTP loads. Hornady Custom ammunition uses the same XTP bullet available as a component, so reloaders already know exactly how this projectile performs.
- 158gr XTP expands reliably while retaining most of its weight for deep penetration
- Heavy bullet design is well suited for hunting deer-class game at revolver distances
- Good woods carry option where deep penetration matters more than rapid expansion
- High-quality brass cases reload cleanly for handloaders
- 1,250 fps is slower than many competing 125gr loads, producing less dramatic expansion
- 158gr recoil is stout in lightweight or compact revolvers
- Not the best choice for concealed carry where over-penetration is a concern
