How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.

Product Overview

Winchester USA's 71-grain FMJ is the quickest of the 71-grain ball loads here, though not by much: 905 fps and 129 ft-lbs at the muzzle. From a 25-yard zero it is 2.4 inches low at 50 yards and 16.6 inches low at 100, figures that say plainly this is a close-range pocket-pistol cartridge. In the reference pistol it produces about 1 percent more recoil energy than PMC Bronze 71, Federal American Eagle 71 or CCI Blazer 71. The brass case is reloadable.

The 71-grain field is tight at the muzzle. PMC Bronze, American Eagle and Blazer all leave at 900 fps, 5 fps behind the Winchester, and that spread is smaller than the difference between two pistols of the same model. Fiocchi Range Dynamics 73 is the one real gap in the group: 1,000 fps at the muzzle, 95 fps faster than the Winchester, with about 25 percent more recoil energy in the same pistol. Among the 900 fps loads, Blazer is the total metal jacket with no exposed lead, and American Eagle and PMC Bronze are standard FMJ in brass.

Buy Winchester USA 71 for general range practice with a .32 pocket pistol, and especially if you carry a 71-grain hollow point: Magtech's 71-grain JHP is loaded to the same 905 fps and 129 ft-lbs and carries the same recoil energy estimate, so practice and carry feel identical. If you would rather have the mildest possible session, PMC Bronze 71 or American Eagle 71 give up only 5 fps, and if you want more speed, Fiocchi Range Dynamics 73 has 95 fps more at the muzzle.

Strengths
  • 129 ft-lbs at the muzzle, 3 more than PMC Bronze 71's published 126 and 1 more than American Eagle 71 and Blazer 71
  • Brass case is reloadable; CCI Blazer 71's aluminum case is not
  • 2.4 inches of drop at 50 yards from a 25-yard zero, so one zero covers every distance a pocket pistol is used at
Limitations
  • Fiocchi Range Dynamics 73 publishes 152 ft-lbs, 23 ft-lbs more at the muzzle
  • CCI Blazer 71's total metal jacket has no exposed lead for indoor ranges that restrict it; Winchester's bullet is a standard FMJ
  • PMC Bronze 71 and American Eagle 71 leave at 900 fps with the least recoil energy in the set for shooters who want the softest session
