Hornady's Custom load pushes a 155-grain XTP hollow point to 1,410 fps, the fastest muzzle velocity in its comparison group, for 684 ft-lbs. Power factor is 219. From a 25-yard zero it is 0.8 inches low at 50 yards and 6.9 inches low at 100 yards. It is still supersonic at 50 yards at 1,224 fps and arrives at 100 with 1,090 fps and 409 ft-lbs. Recoil energy in the same pistol is the highest of the six loads in the group, by a small margin over the Winchester USA Ready Defense 170.
The speed shows downrange. PMC Bronze 170-grain drops 9.8 inches at 100 yards to the XTP's 6.9, a difference of 2.9 inches, and arrives 130 fps slower. Hornady's own LEVERevolution 150-grain FTX drops 9.7 inches at 100 and the 135-grain MonoFlex 8.6, so the 155 XTP is the flattest of the group by 1.7 inches or more. It also carries the most energy: 94 ft-lbs over the USA Ready Defense at the muzzle and 125 over the Winchester Silvertip 175. The trade is recoil. It produces about 10 percent more recoil energy than the PMC, about 36 percent more than the LEVERevolution and about 49 percent more than the MonoFlex, but is within 4 percent of the USA Ready Defense and the Silvertip.
This is the 10mm Auto load for shooters who want the most speed and energy from a hollow point, for hunting at handgun distances or for defense. Shooters who want bullet weight over speed should look at Speer Gold Dot 200-grain, at 1,100 fps and about 8 percent more recoil energy. For a ball load at similar energy, there is Fiocchi Shooting Dynamics 180-grain FMJTC at 624 ft-lbs, 60 ft-lbs under the XTP.
