Winchester's Super-X load carries a 175-grain Silvertip jacketed hollow point, a self-defense bullet, at 1,200 fps for 559 ft-lbs at the muzzle. Power factor is 210 and well past the 165 major floor. The 175-grain weight sits between the 170-grain loads and the 180s it is compared with, and recoil energy in the same pistol lands in the same order: above PMC Bronze 170-grain, below the Winchester Defender 180-grain Bonded and Hornady Custom 180-grain XTP.
PMC Bronze 170 matches the Silvertip's 1,200 fps but not its energy, trailing at 543 ft-lbs. The two Winchester loads split on speed and bullet: the Defender 180 Bonded runs 1,240 fps for 614 ft-lbs and is loaded in nickel-plated brass, where the Silvertip uses plain brass. Hornady Custom 180 XTP is the hot load of the group at 1,275 fps and 650 ft-lbs, and it produces about 17 percent more recoil energy than the Silvertip in the same pistol. Every load here makes major; power factors run from 204 for the PMC to 230 for the Hornady.
Buy the Silvertip if you want a 10mm Auto self-defense load with a lighter recoil impulse than the 180-grain hollow points but more bullet weight than the 170s. Shooters who want the most energy should pick Hornady Custom 180 XTP at 650 ft-lbs. Shooters who need a ball load for practice should know that Fiocchi Shooting Dynamics 180-grain FMJTC runs 50 fps faster and produces about 13 percent more recoil energy than this load, so it will feel closer to the Defender than to the Silvertip.
