Product Overview
Hornady's 10mm Auto MonoFlex is a 135-grain solid copper-alloy expanding bullet that Hornady markets for handgun hunting. It leaves the muzzle at 1,315 fps with 518 ft-lbs, a power factor of 178 that clears the 165 major floor by more than 12. It drops to 1,108 fps by 50 yards. From a 25-yard zero the bullet is 1.0 inch low at 50 yards and 8.6 inches low at 100, where it still carries 985 fps and 291 ft-lbs. The brass case is reloadable.
Hornady Custom 155-grain XTP is the heavier expanding load in the group: 95 fps faster at the muzzle, 166 ft-lbs ahead and still 116 fps faster at 50 yards, in exchange for about 49 percent more recoil energy. Hornady LEVERevolution 150-grain FTX takes the other route to a heavier bullet. It starts slower, at 1,225 fps, so its 15 extra grains leave it with nearly the MonoFlex's muzzle energy rather than more of it. The MonoFlex carries the lightest bullet of the three and sits between the two in speed.
Buy the MonoFlex if you want a lead-free expanding bullet for handgun hunting with less recoil than the heavier hunting loads. If you want more energy for the same purpose, Hornady Custom 155-grain XTP carries 409 ft-lbs at 100 yards against 291 for the MonoFlex. If the job is range and steel work, the SinterFire Next Generation (NXG) 125-grain ball is the frangible pick and gives up 84 ft-lbs. Shooters after a conventional defensive load should look at Winchester USA Ready Defense 170-grain JHP instead, which brings 72 ft-lbs more at the muzzle and about 45 percent more recoil energy.
