Fiocchi markets its 40-grain JHP for small game and target shooting, so it is one load for both jobs. The bullet is a jacketed hollow point: a lead core in a copper jacket, with an open cavity at the nose. Fiocchi rates it at a G1 BC of .114 and 1,910 fps at the muzzle, and it still holds 1,343 fps at 100 yards.
Compared with CCI's Pour Pack Maxi Mag 40-grain, the Fiocchi starts 35 fps faster and keeps 17 fps of that lead at 150 yards. In the wind the two are hard to tell apart: at 150 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Fiocchi about 13 inches sideways and the CCI about 13. Compared with Armscor's 40-grain JHP, the Fiocchi also starts 35 fps faster at the muzzle, 1,910 against 1,875 fps.
Buy the Fiocchi if you want a 40-grain hollow point its maker markets for both small game and target shooting, with a slightly faster start than the CCI or Armscor. Pick CCI's Varmint Maxi-Mag 40-grain JHP if you want the load CCI markets for varmints; it is the same load as the Pour Pack. If you want a lighter bullet with a faster start, Winchester's Varmint LF 25-grain, which Winchester markets for varmints and small game, leaves the muzzle at 2,100 fps, but the same wind pushes it about 18 inches at 150 yards.
