Product Overview
CCI markets its Varmint Maxi-Mag 40-grain JHP, a .22 Magnum rimfire load, for varmints. The bullet is a jacketed hollow point: a lead core inside a copper jacket, with an open cavity at the nose. CCI rates it at a G1 BC of .114 and 1,875 fps at the muzzle.
Compared with Remington's 40-grain JHP, the CCI starts 35 fps slower, but the two stay close downrange. At 150 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 13 inches sideways, and zeroed at 100 yards both drop about 6 inches. Compared with Fiocchi's 40-grain JHP, which has the same G1 BC as the CCI, the CCI trails by 25 fps at 100 yards, 1,318 against 1,343 fps, and the path at 150 yards is again within an inch.
Buy the CCI if you want a 40-grain hollow point its maker markets for varmints and you shoot out to about 150 yards, where it keeps pace with the faster 40-grain loads to within an inch. Pick Remington's 40-grain JHP if you want the load Remington markets for small game. Armscor's .22 WMR 40-grain JHP starts at the same 1,875 fps as the CCI.
